Berlin is the largest city in Germany and is placed in the state of Brandenburg by the river Spree. In 1871 emperor Friedrich Wilhelm 4. made Berlin the emperial capital which gave growth both political, economical but also as a cultural centre. In 1945 when the World War II had ended the city were devided into two parts by the conquerors. Many af the old buildings were destroyed but the famous Brandenburger Tor (1788-91) was preserved.
